My real challenge, however, was not only getting the snake in focus (focusing on the near eye), but also waiting for its tongue to shoot out. ![]() The best workaround is to hold the lens flush against the glass. Glass (acrylic) displays pose a problem in that the glass tends to distort the shot. While the fluorine coating may seem more critical on a bulbous front element, with a macro it takes the worry out of getting too close to plants that may deposit pollen on the lens and to insects that may fly into the lens or hitch a ride on the lens shade and make their way to the front element (it happens-and you don’t want to know what’s left behind).ĪRUBA ISLAND RATTLESNAKE BEHIND GLASS. This lens also adds a fluorine coating on the front element to resist dirt and smudges, as on the Tamron 15–30mm zoom I tested previously. Tamron touts the new lens as moisture-proof and dust-resistant with seals at critical points. The older model featured moisture-resistant construction. ![]() Generally, I focus on the reproductive organs at or around the center of the flower, which creates a problem, since that may throw the colorful petals out of focus. The tricky part about photographing flowers is where to focus. ![]() However, on the surface and under the hood there are noteworthy differences-some visible, others unseen, a few tactile, and one audible. I gingerly edged my way closer so as not to frighten the bird. This tiny bird was feeding (it lives on the ground), bobbing its head up and down-but otherwise didn’t move around very much. The new lens is currently available for Canon and Nikon, with the Sony Alpha mount on pre-order at retailers.īUTTON QUAIL: AF WITH MANUAL OVERRIDE. ![]() When the new Tamron SP 90mm F/2.8 Di VC USD 1:1 Macro (Model F017) arrived, I was really eager to see the what this updated model brings to the table. It also helped that this specimen was feeding on sugar water, although that didn’t stop it from moving around. Internal focusing makes it much easier to approach skittish subjects, but when shooting at a 1:1 reproduction ratio (life-size) I find it best to set focus to the closest setting and move in and out with the camera until the key element snaps into focus, usually the region around the head, if not the eye or proboscis (feeding tube).
